About Chinese Herbal Medicine
What is Chinese Herbal Medicine?
Chinese medicinal herbs are thousands in number! They are the bark, roots, leaves, berries and more of the plant, mineral and animal kingdoms. Each has its own specific properties (taste, temperature) and actions as exerted on the tissues/organs of the human body. The main difference between Chinese herbal formulas and Western drugs is the attention paid to balance. Whereas Western pharmaceuticals are often the most specific acting (e.g. beta-blockers) and most concentrated, Chinese medicinal formulas prioritize balance. Each formula is specific to a patient's constitution and condition, carefully selected to guide without disturbing the body in its healing process.
Formulas are dispensed in raw, powdered or pill form. Topical ointments, plasters, etc. are also used.
